As my vacation continues, I have really spent lots of time taking advantage of Netflix Watch Instantly to pass the time. I have watched numerous films I have seen before and also trying to watch a few new ones.

Bernie, was directed and written (screenplay) by Richard Linklater. It is based on a story/article in Texas Monthly by Skip Hollandsworth, who also helped co-write the screenplay. It stars Jack Black, as Bernie, a real life guy who lives in a small Texas town. He is loved by everyone (as the movie is shot like a documentary and we get interviews with some of the other people in the city), a very social and religious guy, who works at a local funeral parlor. He is known for going out of his way to make sure people are happy, and that includes after the loss of a loved one. After the loss of her husband, he meets Shirley Maclaine, a lady who the town is not a fan of. After spending some time with him, it seems that she is starting to change for the better. But there comes a tipping point where she starts to go too far and he can’t take it anymore, and ends up shooting her. But he is shocked and does his best to hide his secret for as long as he can, but after awhile family and a few people start to get worried and find her body. As he is about to head to trial is where this movie, really gets interesting. It seems that the towns people seem to agree that killing people is wrong, but they can understand why he did it. We get a big push for local cop, played by Matthew McConaughey, who is out to bring him to justice.

I know some of what I brought up in the review so far, could be considered somewhat spoilers, but it’s based on a true life event, so you can take it for what it’s worth there. I think you can still enjoy this movie even with knowing that much of the story. I think Jack Black did a great job of portraying this guy, who is a little on the creepy side at times. It’s always nice to see those crazy comedic guys playing in some more serious roles at times. Best example for me, not a huge fan of Will Ferrell in his comedy roles, but I seem to rather enjoy his more dramatic stuff.

If you are in the mood for a creepy at times movie, a little on the darker side at times, this will be a good movie to check out. It’s nothing you need to rush out and see, but if you are browsing Netflix Watch Instantly, give it a shot.

Like I said, I have been spending some time, watching the second season of Todd and the Book of Pure Evil and When We Left Earth. Two totally different series, but enjoyable in their own way.

I am pretty sure that my next review will be for a new movie, called Smashed, so be on the lookout for it. Although I do have some big news, that I will be reviewing/writing for Geeks of Doom, so I think my reviews will be posted there from now on. So for you to keep up with my reviews, I would suggest that you follow me on twitter or be sure and visit Geeks of Doom.

Until next time, as always, go out and see a movie. I know it’s starting to get cold for most of you out there, it’s worth venturing out to see a movie.

Sean @ the Movies: Dark Shadows

There is always that time after watching a good movie, that you know a bad movie is coming soon. Sometimes it takes a few movies, and sometimes it doesn’t. And me being a Tim Burton fan, I had some interest in seeing this. But nothing I felt I needed to see in the theaters.

Dark Shadows, was directed by Tim Burton, with a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith, based on a story by Seth and John August, based on a TV series by Dan Curtis. And it should be no surprise that a few of the Burton favorites are in this one, including Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. But we also have Michelle Pfieffer, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, and Chloe Grace Moretz.

I had never seen the TV show, and this movie is not going to make me want to go back and watch the show. So not sure how the movie is compared to the TV show. But the short version of the story, guy falls in love with girl, but seems another girl loves him too. She gets mad, puts a curse on his family, turns him into a vampire, locks him in a coffin, only to be released 200 years later. Another story of a stranger trying to fit into a strange time. Let me put it this way, if you see the trailer for this movie, you pretty much seen every thing you need to see. I can admit I did laugh a few times during the movie, but nothing I am proud of.

If you are going to see one Tim Burton film this year, skip this one and see Frankenweenie instead.

And with that, it’s time to wrap up this review, and hopefully next up will be a better movie. I am on vacation this week, so there may be a trip to the theater to see a few movies, or a few things I want to check out on Netflix. Be on the lookout either way.

As always, until next time, go out and see a movie, hopefully a good one.

Sean @ the Movies: Skyfall

It’s once again that time of year, when we happen to have a new Bond film to look forward to. And this one is extra special in a few ways. We are celebrating 50 years of Bond with this film, and this film almost didn’t even happen. So grab your favorite drink, no matter how you like it served, it’s time for Bond, James Bond.

Skyfall, was directed by Sam Mendes, with a story by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, John Logan, and of coursed based on characters from the great Ian Fleming. And once again, Daniel Craig is back playing Bond, along with Judi Dench as M. And we can’t have a Bond film, without a villain, and Javier Bardem, once again proves he can be a very creepy bad guy. And because it’s a Bond film, a few more things to point out, we get our theme song by Adele, and we have our Bond babes, Naomie Harris and Berenice Marlohe, although neither compare to Eva Green from Casino Royale.

Well now you know the cast, let’s go a little into the story. Well this one is more a personal movie, where our bad guy is more out to ruin some of our regulars, before they try and take over the world. It deals a lot with cyber terrorism and also spends some time, talking about how the secret agent is a thing of the past and it’s time to look towards the future. But Bond and M are not going out that easy. Not a whole lot of gadgets in this one, more just using their survivalist instincts to defeat the enemy.

And if you are a old school Bond fan, let me just say there are plenty of nods and easter eggs for you to enjoy. I don’t want to spoil any of them, but I am sure you will get a few more chuckles than those that are new to the series.

I was a huge fan of Casino Royale, and I think I was one of the few that still enjoyed Quantum of Solace, so I had some high expectations going into this one. I need to re-watch Casino Royale again, before I go see this one again, just to make a fair judgement. But I did really enjoy this one. What we get is one of the most visually stunning and amazing Bond films ever. Some amazing set pieces and some great use of lights to add some mood and style throughout the film. People were a little worried about Mendes behind the camera on this one, but I can say it doesn’t take long to realize he did this movie. We start off with the big action sequence and then get a few here and there during the movie until the big showdown, which ends as Bond and his friends fight to protect Skyfall.

If you are a Bond fan, you most likely have already seen this movie, so you could care less what I have to say about it. But I am going to say that even if you aren’t a big James Bond fan, there is plenty of spy goodness for you to enjoy. And please make sure you see this on the big screen, in fact, I even heard that even though it wasn’t shot in IMAX, still worth seeing, as they utilize the IMAX ratio. So there may or may not be a trip to Lincolnshire to see it in IMAX.

And now we wait a few years until James Bond once again graces the big screen and I can’t wait to see what’s next for the franchise. At least we know that Craig will be around for at least a few more.

That is going to wrap up this review and with a stay-cation coming up, should be some time to see and watch a few movies, so hopefully I will have some reviews for you to enjoy next week.

Until then, why not go out and see a movie

Sean @ the Movies: Argo

Well it has come to that time of the year, the leaves are turning color, and the temperatures are starting to drop, and it’s going to get darker sooner. That means the summer season is over and we are in the middle of fall, which means, it’s Oscar season. We move on from the popcorn movies with giant explosion and very little story and move onto the more serious and thought provoking films. I love movies of all sorts, but it’s nice to switch things up a bit. And with the Oscars just a few months away, it’s only fitting that this review, is for a movie that has some Oscar buzz behind it.

Argo, was directed and stars Ben Affleck, with a screenplay by Chris Terrio, based on an article by Joshuah Bearman. And is based on the recently declassified story, of the lengths the CIA went to rescue a few American hostages during the Iran Hostage Crisis. I was about 4-6 when this happened, so I can safely say I have memory of this. But luckily for us folks, we have this movie to show us what happened. Affleck is brought in to help figure out a way to rescue these people before they are hunted down and possibly killed. Well, let’s make a fake movie and let’s pretend they are there to scout a location for their new movie, a space epic, called Argo. But there is lots of planning and time needed to pull this off. And for those that aren’t familiar with this period of time, I won’t go much further into the story.

It also stars a slew of other people who I don’t think we see enough in films. Okay, besides Bryan Cranston, John Goodman and Alan Arkin, who we see plenty of lately, and that is a good thing. But I am more talking about the great cast, who make up the six hostages, which include, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVall, Scoot McNairy, Rory Cochrane, Christopher Denham, and Kerry Bishe. And for the cast, everyone expect Affleck, really looked closed to the real life persons, stick around during the credits to see how close. And that also goes for some of the shots, that were recreated from the real life photos during the time.

Well I greatly enjoyed this movie, that Affleck fellow really knows hows to make some great movies. We go on a roller coaster of emotions as the movie progresses, we get some laughs, way more than you would expect and some very intense, raised heartbeats during the final act. And that is even with knowing the outcome of the events ahead of time. It reminds me of The Fighter, which I was still on the edge of my seat, even the second viewing. I haven’t looked into how much stuff was added to increase the tension during the final act, but after watching it, I don’t care. This movie will stick with you and is going to be a favorite for a lot of people when the year end lists are made. Me personally, I am starting to think that my top ten is going to be a tough one to come up with this year, so many great movies, finding ten best, is going to be rough. And we have a few months left to go before the year is over. And if you can’t tell, this is one I am going to say you should go out and see for yourself, and I wouldn’t wait for it to come out on DVD, this is a great theater experience, that deserves to be seen on a big screen in a dark theater.

And I think that is going to wrap up this review, and I am not sure what is going to be next up for review, but I do know a certain Bond film opens this coming weekend, either way, be on the lookout for it.

As always, be sure and go out and see a movie, otherwise Argo fuck yourself. Don’t take it personal, if you see the movie, you will get the joke.

Sean @ the Movies: Indie Game: The Movie

After spending 24 hours playing video games, raising money for my local Children’s Hospital, it should be no surprise that the next movie I watched, had a little something to do with video games.

Indie Game: The Movie, was directed by Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky, and as the title suggests, it’s a documentary about indie games. It seems to focus on two games in particular, Super Meat Boy, created by Tommy Refenes and Edmund McMillen and Fez, created by Phil Fish.

And let’s just say that after watching this, you wonder how these people are still alive. They put numerous hours into these games, and sacrifice a lot just to get the game out there. And Fez is still not done yet, and if Phil Fish has any hair left, and doesn’t have a stroke or heart attack before then, he should consider himself lucky. There are times when you feel sorry for these guys and other times, you kind of wish they would fail. But no matter how you feel about them, still found this to be a very interesting film. I am not sure if that goes for those of you out there, who don’t play video games, but maybe it will give you a little insight into the process of making video games, on a smaller scale. Sure it may be pretty easy when you have hundreds of people working on it, but how about doing it with maybe only one other person. I know for me, at some point down the road I will try and seek these games out and give them a go, now that I have a little insight into the process of making them.

And to even make this a little easier for you, you can fire up Netflix and watch this right now on Watch Instantly. So if you have any inkling into video games, I would say this is one to check out. It’s shot beautifully and has some nice music to go along with the film. And hey, you might even learn a thing or two.

That is going to wrap up this review, and I have a few possible movies for my next reviews, so keep an eye out for those. Hopefully tomorrow I will be seeing Looper again, and listening to the commentary this time.

Until next time, go out and see a movie.

Sean @ the Movies:Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

As we are fast approaching the so called end of the world, it’s only fitting that I check this movie out before we all meet our maker. But if for reason we wake up the morning after and all is well, at least I can say I still saw this movie.

Seeking a Friend For the End of the World, is directed and written (screenplay) by Lorene Scafaria, and stars Steve Carell and Keira Knightley. A large asteroid is hurtling towards Earth and the final countdown has begun. And after his wife leaves him, Steve pretty much carries on his normal life, going to work and just trying to keep his sanity, which some people have lost and are living it up. He meets Keira, a girl who also lives in his building, a free spirit, who is dealing with a boyfriend, who is trying too hard to impress her. After finding out that an old girlfriend of his, still loves him, he decides to hunt her down before the world ends. Keira and her dog, join him on his journey, as he knows someone who has a plane and can help her be back home with her family for when the world dies.

This movie has plenty of heart and laughs that make the end of the world not seem so bad. As you see how different people react to the impending doom, it makes you wonder how would you behave knowing when it’s all going to end. Do you just continue with your daily life, end it early, and party like there is no tomorrow.

There are a ton of cameos in this movie, and if you are a fan of TV shows, there are going to be some familiar faces, along with someone who has been missing from a certain Vegas show, wink, wink.

This was a great movie, and one that I am glad I finally got to see it. I remember hearing some decent things about it when it was in theaters, but never got around to seeing it. I am hit or miss when it comes to Carell in movies, but I always seem to enjoy seeing Mrs. Knightley. And these two were great together and along with a great story, it just made a great overall combination.

It seems that the farther I get into the year, the harder it is going to be for me to pick my top ten movies of the year, as this one could possibly be in the running. So do yourself a favor and check this one out, and if the world is going to end in a few months, I would hurry up and check it out.

And I can say that the next movie is going to be about video games, more importantly, independent video games. You might not be too interested, but is it worth your time to at least give it a shot? Stay tuned to see what I have to say about it.

As always, go out and see a movie, perhaps a scary one. I mean really scary, like From Justin to Kelly. I am not sure most of you can handle that nightmare, I am too scared to see it myself. Do you have the testicular fortitude to watch it?

Sean @ the Movies: Frankenweenie in 3D

And here we go, my next movie, and like I teased earlier, it’s about a boy and his dog.

Frankenweenie is directed by Tim Burton, and is based on an original story by Tim Burton, screenplay by John August and Leonard Ripps. And we have Charlie Tahan, voiceing our main character Victor, with Catherine O’Hara and Martin Short lending to their voices to a few characters in the movie. But let’s not forget about Martin Landau and Winona Ryder, a few Burton favorites. And what would a Tim Burton film be without the talented Danny Elfman giving us the score to the movie.

The story is based on a live action short that Burton did in 1984, I remember I used to have the VHS of it. It was about a boy, who after the death of his dog, decides to bring him back to life, much like the classic Frankenstein monster. Well in this telling of the story, it’s basically the same, but mix in a cast of characters who are basically parodies of the classic monster/horror genre. But with Burton, we know things are going to be a little different, this time it’s stop motion animation and in black and white. Both of these really give it a classic look and feel. And due to ParaNorman coming out this year, it is hard not to contrast and compare the two. They both have characters with some bodies that seem almost comical at times, and with Frankenweenie, pretty much what you would expect from the mind of Tim Burton. ParaNorman tries to be really realistic, while Frankenweenie, at times sort of reminds you of those old christmas specials, with the body movements and the way their mouths move, see Martin Landau’s character. And consider I paid the extra bucks to see this on a LIMAX screen, you really see the slight movements or background pieces a little off during each frame. Some would say that is a knock against it, but I rather that approach over the super realistic.I saw both in 3D, and I would say that they are both checking out in 3D if you get the chance, no real moments of things sticking out at you, but it adds a little something to suck into the world even more.

I have to say the edge in the story sort of favors, and maybe the whole dealing with the loss of a loved pet, is something we all have been through and know how much it affects us ( be prepared to sense a few tears coming your way). I will say there is a side plot in Frankenweenie, which sort of sends you off on a side track, which I am guessing is used to lengthen the movie a little.

This should be no surprise, but I am going to say that this is one I would suggest seeing in the theaters, and for me, worth the extra few bucks to see it in 3D. And when it comes to the kids, some scary moments that maybe a little too much for them, and of course the whole dealing with the death of a pet, may turn your kids into crybabies during the movie. So maybe stick with the older kids for this movie. And if you are a Tim Burton fan, I am sure you have already checked out this movie, and you most likely enjoyed it also.

I think that is going to wrap up this review, and not sure what is going to be next up to review, have a few ideas, and seems to be a few movies I want to check out on Netflix Watch Instantly, so be on the lookout for whatever movie is next.

As always, go out and see a movie.

Sean @ the Movies: Compliance

After a small break, I am back and it’s time for some movie reviews for your eyes to enjoy. And we have some very interesting movies, not related in any way, but both good in their own ways. Let’s get started…

Compliance, was written and directed by Craig Zobel, and stars Dreama Walker, in a totally different role that we are used to seeing her in. She plays a young girl who works at a fast food chain, when one day her boss, played by Ann Dowd, gets a phone call from a police man. He claims that Dreama has taken some money from a customer, and he needs her help to solve this problem, and that is when the OMG factor turns on. And to add to the creepiness, is the look and feel of the movie, very dark colors and not a lot of brightness, adds a little something to the mood of the viewer when you watch this.

This is one of those movies that makes you feel dirty and sad for society. This is based on a true events and as you watch this, as things get weirder and weirder, you wonder why anyone would still follow the voice on the phone. Luckily there are a few characters who realize that things don’t seem right, but aren’t able to stop the madness. And even when it’s all said and done, a few said they were just doing what he said, and can’t see why they are wrong for what they did.

This is a great movie, but it’s not one that makes you feel good after seeing it. But sometimes it’s nice to see a movie come along and get you out of your comfort zone. But it makes you think too, and those are the ones that really stick with you. You ask yourself how long before you would have questioned the voice on the other side of the phone. You could say one thing now, but if you were put in that situation, would you react in the same way.

I have a feeling this may be a contender for one of my top ten movies of the year, and it’s one that I would highly suggest you see. But like I said earlier, it’s a rough film and it might make a few people uncomfortable, but I hope you at least get something from the movie.

And I can promise that the next movie, will be lighter and more family friendly. But you will have to wait and see what it is. I’ll give you a hint, it’s about a boy and his dog. And yes that means it’s going to get a little dusty in theater at times.

Until next time, go out and see a movie.

Sean @ the Movies: Looper

And our timey whimy movie theme continues with the next movie I am going to review. This is one that I have been looking forward to seeing. I really enjoyed Brick, and Brothers Bloom took a few viewings, but has grown on me.

Looper was written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, basically playing the same person, just different times. In the future time travel will exist, but the mob uses it to send back people to be killed by Loopers, which Joseph is one of. Well things get thrown off course when an older version of himself shows up, Bruce, and he must track him down and figure out his plan to change his future. It deals with time travel and I like to keep my reviews without containing any spoilers, so that is the basic plot of the story. We also have some supporting roles by Jeff Daniels and Emily Blunt (who seems to popping up a lot this year, which is not a bad thing).

Well this was a great movie to watch after seeing Primer, as one movie goes into great detail explaining time travel, and Looper just gives you the basics you need to know and just concentrates on the story. It took a little bit for this movie to get going for me, but when it did, it really had me hooked. And this is one that is going to warrant a second viewing, cause after hearing/reading some reviews, and checking out some interviews with the director explaining some stuff, need to process it all in a second viewing. I would also suggest seeing this movie with some friends, cause it’s one of those movies you want to talk about after seeing it.

We get a great cast, and Joseph and his enhancements, did a great job of playing a younger Bruce Willis. And Rian Johnson once again gives us a great story (few times you think you know where the movie is going, and he surprises and leads it in a whole new direction) along with some visual styling we are used to seeing in his movies. And he is able to do it on a rather small budget, don’t always need to spend millions to make a great movie. If you are heading out to see a movie, this is one I would suggest seeing, and seeing again. I would also be sure and check out /film.com and check out some of the articles/interviews, after you see the movie, just to get a few answers and also some things to look out for the next time you see it. If you suddenly have a headache or start to get a nose bleed as you try and sort it all out, don’t worry that’s normal. If you go cross eyed, then you need to be worried.

I have a good feeling that this is going to be in contention for a spot in my top ten movies of the year. But I guess we still have a few months left before I have to worry about that. And hopefully I can find the time to see a lot of movies before we close the books on 2012. We will have to see what the future brings.

Once again, I am not exactly sure what is going to be next, I have a few ideas, but we will have to see what I can fit in.

Until then, go out and see a movie

Sean @ the Movies: Primer

It seems that there has been a lot of time travel stories in my life lately. I have recently got into the timey whimey world of Doctor Who, and with Looper coming out, more on that later, I decided to finally get around to watching a movie, that people say really does a nice job with the whole time travel thing.

Primer, was directed, written and stars Shane Carruth, along with David Sullivan, who happen to accidentally invent a working time machine. And they devise a plan in which they basically play out their work day, keeping an eye on the stock market, and then with the time machines, end up redoing the day using the info they have gained the first time around. But as they continue to explore time travel, they must decide on how to use it wisely, and how to make sure it is safe.

And they really go into detail how it works and into explaining their plans. This is a movie that is going to leave your head spinning and perhaps make you a little cross eyed. This begs for repeat viewings and maybe some interweb surfing to dive even deeper into the world and physics. And considering I saw Looper after this, kind of did all of the explaining of the rules, that Looper didn’t worry about.

I have a feeling this is going to be a rather short review, but don’t hold that against this film. There is a lot of info given and it is still processing in my brain. Like I said, I plan on re-watching this again, and hopefully have a discussion with someone else who has seen it, to work out the science.

This may be a little difficult to find, I happen to stumble upon a used copy at a Blockbuster closing sale, and just recently got around to watching. But if you are at all fascinated by time travel, and can sit down and really pay attention, this is the movie for you. I had to re-start it, cause I started to dose off (I was tired), and to make sure I hadn’t missed anything, I decided it would be better just to start over.If you can find it, this is one I suggest you sit down and watch.

I am glad I watched this and like I said, a repeat viewing is coming, along with another viewing of Looper most likely too. Good double feature.

That is going to wrap this review and next up will be Looper, which should be up in the next day for you to enjoy, so be on the lookout for that.

Until next time (whenever that may be), go out and see a movie.

Sean @ the Movies: Klown

Well after seeing The Master, I guess this is a good movie to follow it. Or maybe not. Anyways, this is one of those movies that I had no idea what it was a few months ago, but recently I think it was the TRS guys or maybe even /film who brought this movie to my attention. And that attention was full of praise about this movie, which can be a good/bad thing going into it. Let’s see how this one fares in the end. And if you are interested in seeing it, it just got added to Netflix Watch Instant.

Klown, is a film from Denmark, directed by Mikkel Norgaard, with a screenplay/story by Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam, who also star in this movie.

It revolves around those two guys, Frank, a nice guy who sometimes gets the short end of the stick. His friend Casper is in a relationship, but it seems that he is not faithful in any sort of way. They are planning on going on a canoe trip, making some stops at a festival and a brothel, you know, your normal kind of canoe trip. Well Frank finds out his girl is pregnant, but she doesn’t think he is capable of being a good father, so he decides to kidnap his 12 year old nephew to prove he can be a good father. Well as you can guess, hilarity ensues, sort of.

There were a few funny moments here and there throughout the movie. It’s one of those movies that tries to push the envelope to get some laughs. I am a fan of the Jackass and CKY movies, which really go out of their way to push the envelope, unfortunately I didn’t really enjoy this one overall. It just seemed they were trying a little too hard at times. I mean one of the running jokes through most of the movie is about his nephew very small willie.

For me, if you want to see some funny movies that push the envelope, I would suggest watching Borat or Bruno, or if you want to see some guys hurting and torturing each other, there is always Jackass and CKY. But if you want to give it a shot, like I said it is on Netflix Watch Instantly, just be warned it takes a little to get going. I was expecting to it to be over the top the whole movie.

This reminds me a little of The Hangover, didn’t see it right away, heard some great things and left thinking it was an alright comedy, not one of the best ever made, but as they say to each his own.

That is going to wrap up this review, and hopefully this weekend in between work and football and stuff, I can maybe watch a few movies. So if all goes well I should have some reviews for you next week.

Until next time, go out and see a movie.

Sean @ the Movies: The Master

And as promised, next up we have a movie I have been looking forward to, and one that has a lot of positive buzz around it. But will the hype equal a great movie.

Well The Master, is written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who it’s safe to say that I have really enjoyed his previous films, so that’s a positive going in. And let’s add some Philip Seymour Hoffman to the mix, and let’s thrown in the lovely and talented Amy Adams, and in the lead role, we have Joaquin Phoenix, who I am hit and miss when it comes to his roles. But PTA has made me love Tom Cruise in Magnolia, so still looking forward to what Joaquin brings to this movie and his role.

The story revolves around Phoenix, as a guy who seems to love his hard and somewhat dangerous drinks, and his life, as he struggles to find himself after being in the military. He goes from job to job, his personality makes it hard to keep a job, and after one night, he sneaks aboard a ship and meets up with Hoffman, a leader of a religious group, based on his writings, and the followers call him the Master, and his wife, Adams. Hoffman seems to set on trying to fix Phoenix and make him a better person, but it’s not an easy process and it’s hard to say in the end if it worked. It’s hard to change a person who loves his booze and his woman, and it seems a particular lady has really messed him up, yeah I can relate to that one.

So what did I think, well I can say that I liked the movie overall, we get some great roles from everyone, and it looks amazing, I was lucky enough to see it in digital and boy did the colors just jump off the screen. But I will say it was a slow burn till it got good for me, which sometimes happens for me, There Will Be Blood is a great example. Another thing that made There Will Be Blood so amazing, were the powerful monologues given by the actors, well after thinking about it, there were maybe two that I can say stood out in my mind for me. But neither were anything close to some of the amazing moments from Paul Dano and Daniel Day-Lewis. The first moment that got me into the movie, was a great interview between Hoffman and Phoenix, some great dialogue with some intense emotional moments. Sometimes with movies like this, it takes a little while for it to soak in, and you appreciate it the more you think about it. Well I can say that I have been teetering between the same and thinking a little less of the movie. It’s going to be nominated for a few Oscars, and I really hope that Hoffman or Phoenix take home a few, but there is still a part of me, that wonders if this is going to make it into my top ten for the year. Guess we will just have to wait and see how that turns out. I will say that this is not a movie for everyone, but if you are a fan of his earlier work, it’s one that is worth checking out. This may be difficult at this point, but try and go with in with some low expectations, and try not to expect a masterpiece. Maybe a second viewing is needed to finalize my thoughts, but as of now, I would say it may not be one you need to see in theaters, can maybe wait to see it on DVD or Blu-ray. But remember, I thought it was good, still a decent movie, just not one of my favorites of his, that would most likely be Magnolia or There Will Be Blood.

Just as a side note, my friend Dave, who is a big movie geek like me, did not like the movie at all, and thought it was a waste of time and money. But this is one of those movies, where the opinions of people will be heavily divided. Like I said, it’s not for everyone.

And that is going to wrap up this review, and I am not sure what is going to be up next, but I do know there are some movies calling my name on Netflix Watch Instantly. And it seems I will be joining the non-cable crowd, so I have a feeling this will give me some more free time to watch more movies. Although there is still the fall TV season and football to keep me occupied.

Until next time, go out and see a movie, maybe this one?

Sean @ the Movies: The Do-Deca-Pentathlon

If you have been reading my reviews this year, you know that I have enjoyed me some Mark Duplass both in front and behind the camera. Well this time he is behind the camera, along with his brother, Jay Duplass, they wrote and directed this movie, Do-Deca-Pentathlon.

The story follows two brothers, one a family man (Steve Zissis), and the other a single guy (Mark Kelly), who seems to be good at poker. It seems that things are not good between the two of them, sort of a case of thinking the grass is greener on the other side. During Steve’s birthday celebration, Mark makes a surprise appearance and brings up the Do-Deca-Pentathlon, a competition they did in high school, but never really was resolved. Steve does his best to resist the temptation to see who is the ultimate brother, but competition and the urge to prove himself, get the best of him, and once again the games are on, even if some people think it’s stupid and not a good idea.

This sort of has some similar themes as Jeff, Who Lives at Home, brothers living two different worlds, but this has the added elements of some games to see who is the better. I really like Jeff, and this one was OK, had some moments here and there, but if I had to choose, I would chose Jeff. I think they would make a good double feature, and if you have brothers, you can relate at times.

I would hope by now that you have seen/checked out a few of the Duplass brothers stuff, and I can only hope that you have enjoyed them as much as I have. Some of their early stuff is a little weird, story wise, but there is always some heart and fun throughout.

I think this may be the last of the Duplass stuff for 2012, but luckily most of it is going to be in consideration for my top ten movies of the year list, so there should be a few multiple viewings ahead.

And that is going to wrap up this movie and next up, will be The Master, a movie with some great buzz and one that I am looking forward to seeing.

Until next time, go out and see a movie

Sean @ the Movies: The Cabin in the Woods

And as promised, next up, is a movie I missed in theaters, one that definitely got some great buzz once it opened. But it is also one that was sitting on the shelf for awhile, so that is a little reason to be worried. But once you see who is behind it, that worry seems to go away.

Cabin in the Woods, directed and co-written by Drew Goddard, with Joss Whedon being the other co-writer. It’s a horror movie, with a twist, but still has some of the normal horror points. We have a group of friends, with Kristen Connolly, the virgin (?), Chris Hemsworth, the jock, Anna Hutchison, his overly sexed up girlfriend, Fran Kranz, the obligatory stoner dude, and Jessie Williams, the smart jock/new guy. They are heading off to a cabin for a weekend of fun, but things are quite what they seem. And I would love to go a little more into the story, but I don’t want to spoil it for you, if you haven’t seen it yet. I will say, if you see the trailers or commercials, they do give a little of that surprise away.

But have no fear, you should realize that when the mighty Joss Whedon is involved, good things are a coming. Plus I really enjoyed Cloverfield, so another reason to be excited about this movie. I have to say I really enjoyed this movie, plenty of laughs, great one liners, a few jump scares, which would have gotten me in the theaters, and it gets rather gory towards the last half of the movie. There are some great creatures in this movie too. And we get a nice story with some comedy/horror/sci-elements all in one film. I will say I would have liked to see a little more back story dealing with the twist that is revealed, but that might be something that will be brought up on the Bluray,in the special features.

For those like me, that missed this one in theaters, I am going to say that this is one to watch, and I would say it would be worth buying too. For me, I have a feeling it is tinkering on the edge of my top ten list for the year. But we shall see, just a few months left in the year.

Another review done, and I have a few possibilities for my next review, so hopefully there will be a few more for you to enjoy this week.

Until next time, go out and see a movie, and please don’t go camping in a cabin with friends, never turns out well.

Sean @ the Movies: Life Happens

If you are like me and have been watching Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 on ABC, you are now familiar with Krysten Ritter, and once again have been meaning to watch old episodes of Dawson’s Creek. Well it just happens that not only does Krysten act, but she also is a writer, as she co-wrote the screenplay for this movie.

Life Happens, is directed and co-written by Kat Coiro, and like I said earlier, co-written by Krysten, who also stars, as a young lady, who after one night of partying ends up getting pregnant, and must face the life changes that come along with having a baby. The father is a surfer dude, who doesn’t feel like he can be a part of the kid’s life, but luckily she has her two roommates, Kate Bosworth ( a very strong and independent lady, and writer) and Rachel Bilson (a lady who is saving herself for marriage, but seems to show up every once in awhile in sexy outfits as she tries to keep jobs that seem very sexualized). She struggles to keep her crappy job, walking and grooming dogs, and when she meets a guy she really likes, she lies and says her kid is actually one of her friends. And as the lies continue, you can kind of see where this is heading. Friendships are tested, and a surprising, but hilarious relationship pops up, as the movie continues. It’s a story that is easily summed up by the title of the movie, life happens.

Overall not a bad movie, it was nice to see Krysten in a different role from the TV show, and the story has some similar tones you have seen before, but I thought it was an OK movie. There are some funny moments to go along (mostly due to Justin Kirk’s character and his fashion sense) with the more emotional ones, so it’s not a total downer of a movie. This is not one you need to go out and watch right away, but if you are switching between the channels one day and this comes up, it’s at least worth a watch.

And that will wrap up this review, and next up for review will be Cabin In the Woods. And hopefully this weekend, I will be heading to the Oriental, who just got digital projectors, to see Paul Thomas Anderson, next great masterpiece (I hope), The Master. Which also means I may try and fit a Magnolia and There Will Be Blood re-watch before then.

Until next time, go out and see a movie

Sean @ the Movies: Pirates: Band of Misfits

After a little break, with life getting in the way, it is time to get back into the review mode, and one more movie to get caught up on. And this is one that I wish I would have caught in the theaters, and in 3D.

Pirates! Band of Misfits, was directed by Peter Lord and Jeff Newitt, from Ardman Studios, the fine folks who brought us Wallace and Gromit. With a story by Gideon Defoe, with Hugh Grant voicing the main character, The Pirate Captain and his crew, voiced by Martin Freeman, Anton Yelchin, Brenden Gleeson, and many more. All he wants to do is win the Pirate of the Year Award, but he has some stiff competition, voiced by Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven, and Lenny Henry. As he is out trying to prove his pirate-ness, he comes across Charles Darwin, voiced by David Tennant, and joins in their journey.

I can say that I was a huge Wallace and Gromit fan growing up and have seen some of their other movies, never a huge fan of them. But I can say that I really enjoyed this one. I laughed a lot and there were many great one liners during the movie. I will have to say that one thing I didn’t like, was the sort of gags that revolve around current times, one of my big complaints, with the Shrek series. But even with that, still really enjoyed it and I am sure you will enjoy it too. It’s one of those kids movies that has a little something in their for the adults. And as I stated earlier, I wish I had seen it in theaters in 3D, cause it was pretty awesome visually and I am sure the 3D would have sucked me in the movie even more.

So if you are out looking for a movie to watch or rent, for you and the kids, I would say that this is a good choice. Even more if you went out and got yourself a 3D TV.

And that is going to wrap up this review, and I am not sure what is going to be next, I have a few movies that I might get to see in the next few days, but I guess you will just have to see what they are going to be.

As always, go out and see a movie.

Sean @ the Movies: Tanner Hall

I was able to find some time during this past holiday weekend to check out a few movies, decided to lay low at home and watch a few movies via Netflix and stuff.

And first up, is a movie that has a few familiar faces you have seen in other movies in the past few years.Although it seems that this movie came out before their big movies, but I am sure you will recognize them either way.

Tanner Hall is written and directed by Francesca Gregorini and Tatiana von Furstenberg, and stars Rooney Mara, as a young college girl, who along with her friends, Brie Larson and Amy Ferguson, do their best to survive at an all girl school. But when an old friend from the past, Georgia King, shows up, she does her best to fit in with the girls, no matter what lies are needed to be told, or who she hurts in the process. And yeah it’s a movie about love, heartbreak and friendship, so no big twists and turns in this movie. Rooney deals with falling in love with a married man, played by Tom Everett Scott, Brie deals with the complications of trying to seduce a teacher, played by Chris Kattan and it’s effect on his marriage with Amy Sedaris, who had some pretty funny moments during the movie, but that should be no surprise. Amy deals with her sexuality, while Georgia deals with a horrible mother and trying to make some friends, without hurting more people.

But it was still a pretty decent movie, it has some heart and emotion to it and no matter how old you are, or if you are a man or woman, you can relate to certain aspects of each character. This is not one you need to hurry out and see, but if you are searching through Netflix and you see this one pop up, I would say it is worth at least checking out.

And with that, it is time to wrap up this review, and be on the lookout for the next review, which is a movie about pirates, but don’t worry there is no sign of Johnny Depp in this one.

Until next time, as always, go out and see a movie.

Sean @ the Movies: The Five-Year Engagement

Well we have finally come to the end of movies that I have watched and need to get reviewed for you fine folks out there. But have no fear, I might be able to watch a few movies this weekend, it’s a holiday weekend, so plenty of time to watch some movies and stuff. Oh wait, there is Doctor Who on Saturday night and a few races on Sunday, well I guess there is always Monday. You will just have to wait and see.

We are once again, back to about a week ago, just got back from watching two movies in the theater, and for some reason, I was thinking why not watch one more. And hey, let’s throw in a lady I saw in a previous movie that day, the lovely and talented Emily Blunt. And she is back in another indy romance movie, but the Duplass has been replaced by a Segel.

The Five-Year Engagement, was directed and co-written by Nicholas Stoller, with some writing assistance from Jason Segel. And stars both Segel and Blunt as a couple who have been together for a year and after he proposes to her, she says yes, but then things seem to push the big day, until they wonder if they should even go on with it. I know, judging from the title, I am sure you would have never guessed that story. Well even though the story is rather predictable there was plenty of good to enjoy in this movie. Segel and Blunt knocked it out of the park, they work together and even both showed off their comedic side, including some physical comedy from both. But kudos also to the supporting class, including Alison Brie, Chris Pratt, Mindy Kaling, Randall Park, Kevin Hart, and Brian Posehn. I know it’s a long list, but I am sure I missed a few people. But the point is, there is a lot of heart and funny in this movie, and I would say it is worth checking out. Like I said, so real surprises story wise, but still rather enjoyable.

And with that, I think we can wrap up this review and hopefully I will have some more reviews ready and waiting for you next week. Remember it’s a holiday weekend, and it looks like both Brave and Avengers are being re-released this weekend, so you can get a second chance to see them. I would suggest Avengers over Brave, was a little disappointed with Brave.

Have a good weekend, and go out and see a movie for crying out loud

Sean @ the Movies: ParaNorman 3D

After a little break for life to get in the way, I am back and I hope you are ready for a few reviews. No, seriously,I hope you are ready.

Well we rewind back to about a week or so, and I have decided to spend my Sunday watching a double feature, and as you can tell from the poster above, we are switching gears a little bit from the previous movie.

ParaNorman, was directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell, with Butler writing the story. And the story revolves around Norman, voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee, who is a outcast due to his ability to see and talk to dead people. No one believes him, not even his family, his parents voiced by Leslie Mann and Jeff Garlin, and his sister, voiced by Anna Kendrick. The only family member that believes him, is his grandma, voiced by Elaine Stritch, but she is dead and still lingers around the house. Well when a witch’s curse causes the dead to rise, it is up to Norman, his sister, and his wacky crew, think Goonies, the school bully (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), his brother (Casey Affleck), his new and only friend Neil (Tucker Albrizzi ) to save the town. But are the walking dead the real problem or is there more to this so called curse.

Having seen Coraline, and really enjoyed it, I can say that I was looking forward to seeing this one just as much. I have to say that I really enjoyed this one too, but there was a few things missing. I have to say that the overall world in Coraline, granted it was a more fantasy world, was more visually stunning, and really looked amazing on the big screen, and add in the 3D element to really thrown you into the world. But I will say that ParaNorman had way more laughs in it, and I caught myself laughing a lot more than I was expecting to. But the group dynamic was great and lead to most of the laughs. Although the last part of the movie has a serious tone to it, still enjoyed the ride. And once again, this movie was meant to be seen in 3D, just to really seem like you were part of the film and living in the same world as Norman. And along with the world, I think the man behind the music, Jon Brion, deserves some credit for adding some nice touches throughout the movie.

I would say that this is one worth checking out in the theaters, especially in 3D, if possible. It’s well worth the extra few bucks. I will say that it may not be one you will want to bring younger kids too, might be a little too scary and intense for some. But I have to say that if they are a little older, I am sure that both of you will enjoy this ride.

It’s always nice when I do these multiple movies in one day and you get to watch some great movies, always makes it worth it in the end.

And with that, we are going to wrap up another review, and like I said, still have a few more reviews coming up. So be on the lookout for those.

Until then, go out and see a movie

Sean @ the Movies: Your Sister's Sister

And as the streak continues, we finally get into some newer movies that are in the theaters. And last Sunday, I decided to once again venture out and get in a double feature. And first up was another movie that had Mark Duplass involved, which has been a very good thing, either behind the camera, Jeff,Who Lives at Home, or starring, Safety Not Guaranteed.

Your Sister’s Sister, was written and directed by Lynn Shelton, and along with Duplass, stars Emily Blunt (who will show up in another movie) and Rosemarie DeWitt. Duplass is struggling to get over the death of his brother, and his best friend, Blunt, suggests he go visit their family cabin to work out some stuff. Well unexpectedly her sister, DeWitt, is at the cabin too, and she is dealing with just getting over a long relationship. They share a few drinks and stories and end up sleeping together, only to get a surprise visit from Blunt the next morning. And as secrets are kept and emotions begin to rise, things get out of control and what follows is a great movie about forgiving and forgetting about those who have hurt you in some way.

Duplass once again does a great job of being the awkward and funny guy, rocking the jean jacket, which seems to show up in all his movies lately. His chemistry with both girls just gives a realistic feel to the movie, and it’s one of those movies that will have you laughing at one moment, and maybe a little teary eyed in the next. And if you are not familiar with Mark, this is a great way to get just a taste of what he brings to his roles. But the girls also need to get a little attention, as they do a nice job of portraying two sisters who are different in most ways, but they both love each other, through the bad and good.

I would say that this is one you should see, and for those that don’t live in a city that has a indy theater, or two, make sure and keep an eye on this one when it comes out on DVD or Netflix, well worth your time. I said this on Twitter, but it bares repeating, I have a feeling my top ten movie list for 2012, is going to have a lot of Duplass in it.

And I think that is going to wrap up this review, and another chapter in the Duplass love fest. And like I said earlier, we have another new movie coming up next, so stay tuned for that.

Until next time, go out and see a movie (why not one with Mark Duplass in it)
